Earlier, one of my favourite student very sheepishly revealed the result of his recent composition test. In all honesty, I was overjoyed that he had passed his first essay in secondary school, having struggled a great deal during his PSLE year with English because of a language learning disability. Almost immediately, he added that he had the 3rd highest score in class. And with that, he punctuated the news with his megawatt smile. If you are a seasoned teacher or parent, I am sure you can recognise that disposition. I assured him that I am more than pleased to see improvements, even if they are in the form of small steps and a trickle of marks. Of course he proceeded to tell me that the highest mark was an 18 and he was not too far behind with his 16. I like his sales pitch. I admit that I was won over by his charm and the fact that he had put in effort to improve himself despite facing some personal challenges.
