"It's my birthday today! What special birthday lesson do you have for me today?" I bounced the question back to him. He replied by mentioning that he does not wish to receive toys and cards because he is older and more mature now. Instead, in lieu of his upcoming CIP event, I had him draft a proposal to his parents on three meaningful things he can do during his birthday week. The result is both amusing and enlightening.
Happy 15th Birthday 🎂 John!

I was very amused by a 15yo student when he attempted to slide his wet shirt lengthwise (no kidding) into a plastic bag without folding it first. He had arrived totally drenched. So I lent him a tee shirt and a pair of shorts to change into. This happened at the end of the lesson after having explained to him earlier on the need to water proof valuables in his bag and himself - aka carry an umbrella or rainjacket - on wet days like today. Thus a mandatory step by step demonstration on how to fold that tee shirt and shorts ensued. I then had him repeat the process infront of me. While he may be slightly autistic and comes from a very wealthy family with domestic helpers for support services, the mother did reply my message stating that he was perhaps too lazy to fold his clothes properly. Before he left, I repeated the reasons for collasping the small umbrella - mine which I had decided to t-loan him - properly and for placing it in another plastic bag once he is under shelter and before he gets onto the train or bus. I feel like some naggy adult already. Oh yeah, I did transmit every detail to his mother via Whatapp messages in the hope that the boy learns to fish right from home. Still, it was a parenting cum teacher moment where mixed feelings from the past and present came crashing all over me again.
